Reading with Pleasure and Adopting the Idiot Investment Strategy
Within our association, there are many book lovers and writers, Mr Chua Leong Kian is one of them. He heads the Cultural and Educational section.
One can easily find him inside the National Library and Bras Basah Complex. Almost three times a week, he visited the library for research and reading. He has many friends in the book shops nearby. At home, he had also a large collection of books on Southeast Asian Chinese.
You will be wrong if you think that he is just a book worm.
Born in Bagan Si-Api Api, Indonesia, he was educated in Yok Bin High School and St. Francis Institution, Malacca, Malaysia. He started his journalism career in the Nanyang Siang Pau in 1963. At the age of 33, he won a Commonwealth Secretariat scholarship to study Financial Journalism in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom. In 1977, he joined the Straits Times to launch the Bilingual Page, which was then, the current Minister Mentor’s idea, in order to inculcate oriental values and culture. Later, he was recruited by the then Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (now MediaCorp) to be an Executive Editor of the News Room. In 1987, when the Time Inc. launched its Chinese current affairs magazine, Yazhou Zhoukan in Hong Kong, he joined them to be a Senior Correspondent based in Siingapore, but covering Indonesia as well. He used to run a translatin and press clipping agency at Peace Centre, he said, “we were paid to read the newspapers and magazines for our clients, searching for key words.” No wonder he is very knowledgeable.
Mr Chua is also very focussed in his investments in stocks market and real estate. He said he practised an idiot strategy for stocks investment, by simply following what the Lee Foundation invests in. This was a peice of advice given by his father-in-law, Teo Chin Tee, who worked for the Lee Rubber Ltd throughout his life. “He used to tell me that Mr. Lee Kong Chian always reminded us, ‘the higher the price of rubber goes up, the more we sell. The lower the price comes down, the more we shall buy.” His stocks portfolio are mainly in Great Eastern Holding, OCBC, Straits Trading, Fraser & Neave, Robinsons, United Engineers, WBL and Bukit Sembawang. His shop units in the Adelphi and Holland Village are also reaping good rental incomes for his retirement. So he is neither stupid nor an idiot.
